If you don’t use your arms or your legs for sometime, they become weak.
When you start using them again, they slowly become strong again.
Everybody knows this and nobody would think of questioning this fact.
Yet, there are many people who don’t seem to know that the memory works
in the same way. When someone says that he has a good memory, he really
means that he keeps his memory in practice by exercising it regularly.
When someone else says that his memory is poor, he means that he doesn't
give it enough opportunity to become strong. The position is exactly the
same as that of the two people, one exercises his arms, and legs by
playing tennis; While the other sits in a comfortable armchair or in a
motor-call all day. All normal human beings , if they have ordinary
bodies and brains, improve their strength and their memory by the same
means : Practice.
I've noticed this myself. In the past I used to memorize more than a
hundred telephone numbers. I hardly used my telephone notebook to check
for numbers However, as soon as I bought a data bank watch that can
store up to a hundred telephone numbers, I completely depended on it and
I really felt that my memory was getting weaker by the course of time.
Have you noticed that people who can't read or write or even those who
are blind have better memories than those who can? Those who can't read
or write have to remember things, they can't put them down in a notebook
. They have to remember dates, times, prices, names and stories. So
their memory is being exercised all the time and is always kept active.
